Mod Platform Overwolf Launches $50 Million Fund for Mods

[ad_1]

Overwolf, an all-in-one platform that allows creators to build, distribute, and monetize in-game apps and mods, has launched a $50 million Overwolf Creator Fund. This fund will help spur on in-game app, mod creators, and even game studios to use the platform. Those that do so will “gain access to mentorship, acceleration, and marketing services.” It looks like Overwolf is really trying to challenge Curseforge for supremacy in the in-game modding space, which it’s had a stranglehold on for a long time now.

“Everyone wins with community-created experiences. Gamers get in-game apps and mods that make gameplay more exciting; the creators of these in-game apps and mods can turn their passion into a profession, earning a sustainable income for their creations; and game studios enhance their games by outsourcing content creation to talented and passionate gamers, maximizing shelf life and engagement,”  commented Overwolf CEO and Co-founder, Uri Marchand.

“Simply put, community-created experiences are becoming a critical part of gaming, and developers will need to harness its power to thrive in the next era of games. We are thrilled to be able to support both sides of the marketplace, in-game creators and games studios, by launching a new $50M fund that will lay the groundwork for a new era of participating in AAA game creation.”

There will also be support for game studios to incorporate community-created mods into their titles, which definitely seems like a good thing. Mods lengthen the lifespan of games, and without mods, a lot of games that could’ve gone somewhere and been successful aren’t.

If you’d like to check out the Overwolf fund page, be sure to go here. From that page, you can see where Game Studios, Mod Authors, and App Developers can all apply for funding as well. There’s a FAQ on each of the pages, and an interesting question from the Game Studios page asks how the funding is structured. The answer is that Overwolf will act as follow-on investors for studios who have started their projects and have a “dedicated working team.” Those who haven’t started development can still apply, but Overwolf will review the project first to determine whether or not it’s something they want to invest in.
